49 years ago, I drove to a job interview at a small clinic on Whittier Boulevard. When I arrived, a line of people was already wrapped around the parking lot, waiting for a volunteer doctor to see them later that night. That moment propelled me to take action on the issues facing my community. I took the job that day. When I started, we were 2 employees. Today, AltaMed Health Services is the largest community health center in the nation: 6,000 employees, 700,000 patients, and 80 locations across Southern California. This week, I sat down with Yvette M. Walker on the Southern California Business Report to talk about what 49 years of community health has built, and the work still ahead for the families AltaMed serves. That is the AltaMed I am proud to lead. The full conversation with Yvette is linked below. https://lnkd.in/gCHirZ6v

Apr 2026I’ve spent my career in community health and continue to walk away from each day with a core understanding: The way we design care systems determines who gets to stay healthy. Today, I’m proud to share my first op-ed in the leading business innovation publication, Fast Company , “Dignity as a Competitive Business Model,” where I reflect on what happens when institutions move closer to the people they serve. Drawing from our own learnings in growing AltaMed Health Services , I offer practical shifts organizations can implement to center dignity as a competitive advantage. When they design with their communities, measure trust and engagement, and root accountability locally, they drive better outcomes, lower costs, and build stronger loyalty. The question for all of us, across industries, is simple: are we designing systems that people trust, or systems that people struggle to navigate? The organizations that center dignity today will be the ones that endure tomorrow. Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/gk9NxKTu
