Today was not a good day. Tomorrow isn’t likely to be any better. I’m not suicidal. But I wouldn’t be sad not to wake up tomorrow. That’s how bad today was. I was privileged to be able to take today off. I won’t be able to take tomorrow off. So I shall get up and rehearse presenting a somewhat happy face. I shall pour what little energy I have into being productive and meeting targets. If I hadn’t told you, you probably wouldn’t know. This is what poor mental health looks like. This is mental health awareness month. I bet you couldn’t identify all the affected people around you. There’s about 1 in 5 adults in the US that have mental health issues. I’m not alone. And yet that’s no help.
May 2026I am not anti-AI. I am however anti technology that destroys our planet. I also am anti content theft. I am anti-privacy erosion. I am against misinformation and deep fakes. I am against lack of accountability. But setting those significant issues aside, for the context in which I work, I have a problem with bias and prejudice. The training data is flawed. As a result, things built with AI are not accessible for disabled people. Even when (or if) you specifically prompt it. But most people don’t even think about prompting for things to be accessible when they build with AI. Let’s be Frank: the reason the data is flawed in the first place is because the web is not accessible. It is a vicious circle. It’s a reinforcing loop. A feedback spiral. A (maybe inescapable) cycle. And I don’t like it one bit. Gratuitous photo of my service dog looking thoroughly unimpressed, to catch your attention and feed the algo.
May 2026This is the kind of reason I asked Amy Carney, CPWA, MLIS to make a good looking dark mode theme for my new podcast website! Seeing testimony from random strangers about the importance of such “small details” only reinforce how good Infeel about that decision.
May 2026Announcing my new podcast: The Work Between. A show about creativity, identity, and disability. This is a bit different from my previous shows - it's not about accessibility. It's not either about *just* disability. It really is primarily about the creative process, and how it relates to disability. I've interviewed two guests already, and have a couple more lined up. I'm looking forward to talking about quilting, drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, game creation, and more! I do have human edited transcripts, and timed transcripts. Though for some reason Apple Podcast is still using their bad autogenerated transcript, a bug I'm working with them on fixing. So if you need transcript, head for the show's website rather than an aggregator, at least 'till that's fixed. Available on most large podcast aggregators. Alt text for the image: Show cover art.
