It was great to be able to attend an important workshop held yesterday in Derry’s Guidhall - Connected Systems: Critical Infrastructure – Climate Resilience and Interdependencies, as part of TaLX2 (Trans-boundary Adaptation Learning Exchange) project. It was also attended by my colleague Pete Gray who chaired the sectoral presentations. There was also an insightful presentation from Stephen Smyth BEng MSc FIEI Chartered Engineer who presented Transport Infrastructure Ireland recently published National Roads Climate Adaptation Implementation Plan, which Arup were delighted to be able to assist them with. May 2026Marketing has a doing problem. Spent Saturday painting joints on a house my partner is building. He's been on construction sites since he was eighteen. Does 80% of the trades himself because he knows the industry well enough to spot a corner being cut before it becomes a callback. When something goes wrong on a build, he doesn't need a specialist to diagnose it. He's been every specialist. That's rare in marketing right now. The industry is full of leaders who've never written a landing page that converted. Most haven't sat in a sales call to hear what the customer says when nobody's pitching. They got hired anyway. Team grew. Retainer climbed. Then the work ships and something's off. The copy doesn't land. The AI made things up in the email nobody caught before send. Nobody on the leadership team can pinpoint why, because nobody has done any of it themselves. Strategy without doing is just an opinion in a deck. I painted joints this weekend because I like getting my hands dirty. It's why I still write the copy and run the AI prompts myself. I love marketing the way he loves construction. I'm not handing off the parts that make it real. The marketers I trust are still the ones with paint on their hands.
