When a hiring manager emails asking for a quick call to share an update, you know. All the other times, it was an email. Moving forward. Next steps. Could we find time to connect? This one was different. I told a few people anyway. They rallied. "It could go either way." I appreciated that. I know what culture looks like from the inside. I've helped shape it and watched what it looks like when it takes hold. Or doesn't. It's more than a mission and values statement. It's how people show up. How they make decisions. How they treat the people in front of them, especially when no one is watching and nothing is required of them. I saw it firsthand in this process. From the other side of the table. From the very first interview, she was intentional and thoughtful. About the process. And about the person going through it. Curious about my experience. Candid about where the company had been and where it was going. Detailing why this role, why now, and what that meant. She responded to every thank you note I sent. No generic reply. Thoughtfully. In a way that made clear she had actually paid attention. She told me what to expect at each stage and got back to me within the timeframe she promised, every time. And at the end, when the answer was no, she called. She took the time to tell me personally, not with an email, but with a real conversation. It wasn't the outcome I wanted. She wasn't just being kind. She was living the values of the organization. Every response. Every timeline honored. And the decision to call instead of email. Those weren't extras. They were the culture, showing up in real time. That is what it looks like when culture is lived, not just stated. To anyone in the middle of a search - pay attention to how they treat you in the process. It tells you something important about who they are. To anyone in a hiring role - the hiring process is not separate from your culture. It is your culture. Candidates notice.
