5/18/2026 Severe Weather Update Today is the seventh day of forecasted moderate-severe (Category 4) weather across the U.S this year, and the first day since April 28th. This year, there has yet to be a forecast of a high-end severe (Category 5) weather day. A typical year has 2 to 3 days per year of high-end severe weather. Today, severe weather is expected across the Central Plains, with the target being Central to Northeast Kansas, but overall, a very large area of slight severe weather risk as the severe weather peaks today, with less severe weather the remainder of the week as a cold front moves across the country, and high pressure takes hold. Although it might seem like there has been a lot of severe weather when one looks at forecasted days of enhanced – severe (Category 3) or higher weather this year, there have been 27 days this year vs 33 days last year. In terms of severe weather reports, they are running 119% of normal, driven primarily by wind reports at 129% of normal, with hail at 108% and tornadoes at 105% of normal, so fairly normal overall when it comes to reports of severe weather. After a rather slow start to the month, signs are pointing to more of an active pattern emerging over the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned. One of the favorite parts of my job is the education around natural catastrophes and the general predictability of the extreme weather. This week I had the opportunity to travel down to what has been ground zero for some of the most devastating hurricanes to impact the insurance industry in the last 20 years along what I have been told is the "Redneck Riviera". Don't let the name fool you the hospitality of Gulf States and Coastal American Insurance Company staff and attendees was amazing and given the looming El Niño they know not to let their guard down as it only takes one hurricane to cause problems to their policy holders and being prepared is vital to their success in delivering exceptional service when catastrophe strike. I’m delighted to welcome Guy Wilmot and François Colat-Parros to the BMS Group PEMAT practice in London. François joins as a Divisional Director, working alongside Dean Andrews to build out our tax insurance offering. He brings 15 years’ experience from PwC and Deloitte, where he advised corporates and private equity investors on transaction tax, due diligence and cross-border structuring. He has worked on large, complex M&A transactions across Europe, the Middle East, the US and Asia, with experience spanning private equity, energy, infrastructure and industrials. Guy joins as a Director to lead on business development and client strategy across the private capital landscape. He began his career as a restructuring and finance lawyer in London before moving into senior roles across consulting and insurance. He spent nearly eight years at Howden, building the foundation and supporting the growth of its transactional risk business across products and geographies. Most recently, Guy led the global business development function for the finance department at A&O Shearman, where he was part of the leadership team. In that role, he had a front-row view of the growth of private credit. His recent experience, combined with the growing use of insurance solutions across private capital, positions him perfectly to deepen client relationships and help drive our next phase of growth.
