Conversations with others in the digital trust world are so invigorating!. Thanks to @BrooksPierceLaw and @WillQuick for inviting me to participate on a panel with such deep experience on communication and cybersecurity. North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH) put on an amazing event!! I have to confess that the day before, and the day of a conference I always feel a little bit of anxiety. So much mingling in large rooms where I may not know anyone. In truth, I can think a very few times where I did not come away, recharged and excited with a bag of new ideas and tricks to try. Phaedra Boinodiris gave an amazing Keynote on responsible AI and has turned into my latest brain crush. Here’s to community and mingling with your people, even with you’re a little bit nervous. #NCTechFest #DigitalTrust #thinkBrg Several folks asked where to get my book. It’s at www.confidenceadvantage.io And yes, there is an Audible.
May 2026Today is a snuggly Saturday morning with fresh coffee ☕and 3 newspapers. It's okay. Those of you with to-do lists can be jealous. I've been there. I avoid newspaper editorial pages. I'm just not interested in hearing the NYT editorial staff yell at the WSJ staff and vice versa. But never say never. This editorial by Maureen Dowd of the NYT caught my attention with its philosophical headline, "What AI Kant Do?" As in Immanuel #Kant , a German philosopher and theologian writing primarily in the late 1700s. If you've said "leap of faith," you're a little familiar with Kant. This piece grabbed me because Dowd ties her opinion--that we need liberal arts more than ever in an AI world--to a rich history of human thought, including #Shakespeare , #Nietzsche (🤮), #Camus , David #Whyte , and Rene #Rilke (😀), and emotionally and subconsciously resonant moments in Greek Tragedy. Too many years ago, I studied Great Books (think Classics in translation), as well as English Lit and modern and postmodern Philosophy. It wasn't until after law school that I dug into computer science through adult ed programs at MIT, the London School of Economics, other online courses, and lots of self-study and certification programs. I spent much of my thirties, when my kids were quite small, changing diapers and reading books I only half-understood on computer science. Wide reading into questions of how we know what we know ( #epistemology ), what we are ( #ontology ), and what type of society(ies) we want to be ( #moralethics ), and a tolerance for mental friction are essential to helping us navigate beneficially through AI by repeatedly asking the questions that AI struggles with, including: -Why is this the outcome? -Is this a good use of AI? -Is this aligned with our company's values? -Is this aligned with responsible ecological stewardship? -How will we help our employees and drive enterprise value without reducing critical thinking skills? I'll be honest. Sometimes I get a little sad when I pick up an AI governance book, and it reads like a series of software requirements and a how-to on rudimentary risk management — harm x likelihood = risk. While, of course, that is true, it can create shortcuts around the meaty middle questions of Why, Whether, and In What Cases, and goes straight to HOW. These days, HOW is the easiest question of the lot. Let's discuss values alignment, purpose, and human-forward solutions. AI is a YES/AND issue. According to an article in the WSJ this morning, Larry Paige once accused Elon Musk of being a "speciesist." I'm afraid I suffer from the same prejudice. Humanity first. Always. May 2026Honored to be quoted in an AP analysis of the importance of FDA making its reforms durable via rulemaking or, at least, guidance. Perhaps this will be of help to the next FDA Commissioner. https://lnkd.in/e8uC-e9Z
May 2026I'm writing again!! It's the most amazing, energizing thing I do, second only to working with clients IRL on hard problems. Oops, I'm supposed to also mention raising my kids, but y'all know that's implied. I have a longer piece brewing on AI-automated assessments, whether for privacy, AI, cybersecurity, or medical treatment decisions. I swear I'll say this better in the longer piece, but here's the sum of it. Predictions are great. Our brains like them. AI is a statistical-linguistic marvel, turning language into math and math into language. AI is a great partner to great minds. AI assessments are fantastic TOOLS for AI governance teams to help with scaling and pattern recognition. What I worry about when Anthropic, Meta, Google, or Aunt Bea tells you they can automate your risk functions with an AI tool is that your business will fall for the siren call of a plug-and-play, framework-informed model and mistake prediction for the exercise of considered human judgment. Most of the data these models learn from is backward-looking—historical patterns, not future context Responsible AI is as much about choosing from competing values--privacy v security, or observability v business constraints--as it is about aligning to a predetermined set of values. Look at my Bayesian normal curve below. See how much of the data is rear-facing? The brilliance of humanity is in our ability to be creative in the face of uncertainty and weigh values against goals to ensure alignment. Much like my friend Teresa Troester-Falk says, the answer to automated assessment tools is YES IF you work with seasoned, responsible AI governance professionals to make sure your assessments are more than statistically predictive, they are aligned with where your organization is trying to go--and how it shows up in the global community. #ConfidencebyDesign #CbD #AI #responsibleAI #thinkBRG
May 2026Heading into the HFMA Annual Conference this June, I’m thinking about the conversations I am having with finance leaders who are navigating tight margins, ongoing workforce challenges, and the promise of AI. If you’re attending, let’s meet up and compare notes on how your peers are approaching these challenges. Reach out or DM me so we can find time to connect in person.
