LinkedInArtificial Intelligence

JPMorgan is now tracking whether its 65,000 engineers use AI tools. Managers classify them as "light users" or "heavy users." It's tied to performance reviews. Same week, Oracle cut 30,000 people — 18% of its workforce — via 6 AM termination emails. The savings fund AI data centers. These aren't separate stories. They're two symptoms of the same thing: The org chart we've been using for 30 years is collapsing. Nobody has built the replacement yet. The traditional engineering ladder was built on an assumption: experience = capability = output. Senior engineers produce more and better work than juniors. That delta justified the title, the comp, and the hierarchy. AI is compressing that delta faster than anyone expected. When a junior with Copilot ships features that used to require five years of pattern recognition, "senior" stops meaning "produces more" and starts meaning "knows what not to build." Most promotion rubrics don't measure that. Most interview loops don't test for it. Most performance reviews can't distinguish between the engineer who exercised judgment and the one who accepted every AI suggestion without questioning it. Meanwhile, Stanford just published a study showing AI affirms users' positions 49% more than humans — even when the user is clearly wrong. So we're simultaneously: → Compressing the capability gap between levels → Mandating tools that tell everyone their work is great → Using promotion systems that can't measure what actually matters now The companies that figure out what humans are for when AI can do the work — that's the competitive advantage of the next decade.
