“As a VP and CNE, I see every day how the power of nurses to transform health is found in the quiet, relentless courage you bring to each shift—thank you to every nurse and future nurse shaping CAMH ’s future, one act of care at a time.” Ontario Black Nurses' Network Pan-Canadian Association of Nurses of African Descent (PCANAD)

Apr 2026Closing out my second semester in the MPH (Black Health) program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, I’m sitting in deep gratitude. This term challenged me to unlearn, re-ground, and reimagine what health and healing can look like for Black communities. Across courses in Black Health (Chronic Diseases and SRH), Decolonizing Research Methods, Qualitative Research, Practicum Prep, and International Human Rights Law and Global Health, I’ve come to see how deeply interconnected this work is, from policy to lived experience, and from global frameworks to community-rooted care. What made this experience even more meaningful is the sistahood I’ve built with my cohort. Learning alongside such brilliant, grounded, and purpose-driven Black women has been a true gift 🫶🏽 As we head into our summer practicums around the world, I feel proud knowing we are each carrying this work forward in our own ways. Deep appreciation to Sandra Newton, Ph.D., C.Psych. for your care, leadership, and the space you created for us to grow. You will be deeply missed 🤎 I’m looking forward to returning to U of T in September 2026 to begin my second year with even more clarity and purpose. Onward!
Apr 2026It was a fitting way to end University of Toronto 's HAD2012H: Leading and Innovating in Canada’s Digital Health Ecosystem course, at the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics at CAMH . This course reminded me why learning health systems matter. When you bring together physicians across specialties, medical students, nursing, and engineering, the conversation shifts from siloed perspectives to more integrated thinking about how we design, implement, and scale digital health innovations (while being compassionate humans). Over the term, we explored what it really takes to lead in this space: aligning evidence, patient experience, data, and technology to lead meaningful, sustainable change. Not just ideas...but how those ideas actually make their way into care. To our guest speakers, thank you for sharing your expertise and being so open about the realities (and challenges) of innovation in practice. Your insights grounded our discussions in the real world. Karim Jessa MD, FRCPC, FAMIA Tasleem Nimjee, MD, MBA Sara Ling, RN, PhD Ben Rosen Masooma Hassan Eva Serhal MBA, PhD Tristan Glatard Marta Maslej Iman Kassam Sean Patenaude and Hwayeon Danielle Shin. And to the students: your curiosity, critical thinking, and willingness to challenge assumptions made this course what it was. Already looking forward to next year. #DigitalHealth #LearningHealthSystems #HealthInnovation #InterprofessionalEducation #UofT #HealthSystemsLeadership Savithiri Ratnapalan
