Canada is at a generational inflection point, and we need to come together to make the most of it. That was an essential part of the message I brought to the stage at Canada 2020 this week. It's the decisions we make in the next few months – not in the next few years – that will determine whether Canada seizes this moment. We are living through the most significant wave of energy demand growth in our lifetimes. The AI revolution is an energy story. The electrification of transportation and industry is an energy story. The reshoring of manufacturing is an energy story. And Canada, with our resources, our expertise, and a policy environment that is aligning, has a genuine shot at leading it. But windows close. The data centres being designed today are being permitted today. The capital being deployed is making 20-year decisions right now. Canada either earns its place in that conversation – or cedes it to someone else. These conversations matter. Canada has the resources, the talent, and the institutional credibility to lead. But credibility without action is just potential. True leadership requires intention, modern infrastructure, a welcoming investment climate, and an energy policy that balances ambition with pragmatism. At Capital Power , we're not waiting for the conditions to be perfect. We're committed to being part of building them. When I talk about Canada's energy future, I'm not talking about abstractions, I'm talking about the country we hand to the next generation. The jobs that last decades. The tax revenues that fund schools and hospitals. The sovereign capacity to make our own choices in a turbulent, fast-moving world. That's what an energy superpower actually looks like. Not a report. Not a framework. Not a panel. Steel in the ground, electrons flowing, capital committed – on Canadian soil. We're closer to that than we've been in years, and it's up to us to make the most of it. It’s time for relentless execution.
Mar 2026This afternoon, on behalf of Capital Power and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, I had the privilege of welcoming Prime Minister Mark Carney to Calgary as he addressed Alberta's business community. The Prime Minister spoke about how federal-provincial alignment is unlocking Canada's ability to compete for – and win – the major projects that create jobs, generate tax revenue, and build long-term prosperity. This announcement marks something powerful: the federal and provincial governments coming together to collaborate on economic growth and our shared national prosperity. This is Canada at its best. We're living through a pivotal inflection point in the global economy. The AI revolution is driving unprecedented energy demand – the U.S. alone has 130 GW of proposed data center development, nearly matching Canada's entire installed electricity capacity. Canada has a choice: Do we power this growth here, or do we watch it go elsewhere? Today, the federal and provincial leadership aligned on saying "yes" to building. Prime Minister Carney has made Canada's economic growth a national priority. Premier Smith has championed Alberta's role as an energy leader. Together, they're removing regulatory barriers and choosing growth over gridlock. When regulations support – rather than restrict – reliable energy development, major companies and investors know they can build here. Canada and Alberta have the resources, the expertise, the infrastructure, and now – critically – the policy alignment to turn opportunity into action. At Capital Power, we're already boldly building transformative projects. Our $1.6B investment to repower the Genesee facility from coal to natural gas – took Alberta off coal 5 years ahead of government mandate – and added 512 MW of capacity while reducing annual emissions by 3.4 million tonnes. Genesee is the kind of project that shows what happens when vision meets pro-Canada policies. As North America's fifth-largest independent natural gas power producer, our message to the provincial and federal government is that we're ready to build and move at the speed this generational opportunity demands.
