A house in Nanchidwa, Malawi consists of 1,000 cinder blocks. In 2023, Tropical Cyclone Freddy devastated the village, and earlier this month, Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley Bay/Silicon Valley coordinated a week-long rebuild. Eric Elting and I joined eleven other volunteers, the elated homeowners, and local Habitat workers. Over five days, we constructed two x three-room cinder block homes without running water or electricity, but they are waterproof, secure, and engineered to withstand the next storm for four decades. The scale of this work is hard to grasp until you're stacking the blocks yourself. Habitat operates more than 1,500 affiliates across all 50 U.S. states, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and in over 70 countries.
