I'm hiring a Machine Learning Engineer at Checkr, and the scope of what we're building has changed. Checkr is going multi-product. Background checks, identity, personal, fraud, compliance. Each product needs ML that makes safe, defensible decisions, and we're building the shared data platform and AI infrastructure to power all of them. Here's what that looks like day to day: designing AI agents that orchestrate complex product workflows, building eval frameworks that measure whether agents do what we think they do, standing up harness systems so product teams across Checkr can ship ML-powered features without building from scratch, and keeping all of it running in production. This isn't a single-model problem. It's a platform problem. One data layer, multiple products, different risk profiles, shared AI infrastructure. The engineering is as interesting as the ML. I'm looking for someone who's a software engineer first with serious ML range. You'd work across agents, evals, harness, and model serving. I've been at Checkr Trust for 3 years now. Very proud of all that we have accomplished to date, after all the formation of Checkr Trust was not even ideated yet. Back then, we were operating as a series of acquisitions under Checkr, Inc. with too large of a focus to accomplish great things. The potential Trust & Safety use case was obvious, we even had several marquee customers, but hadn't yet committed to it. So we built tiger teams. Small, cross-functional groups with product, GTM and engineering all focused on one thing. No more splitting attention. Those early customers taught us everything. What they actually needed, where the product fell short, what to build next. We have always operated as a fast moving, agile and gritty group. Our leadership team consists of 3 former YC founders, that illustrates the type of mentality we have. Three years later, you might interact with Checkr Trust 3-5 times in your everyday life without knowing it. Rent a Turo, walk into your kids school, apply for insurance, rent an apartment, go on a date - you are interacting with our work at Checkr Trust . I'm proud of that. Could the rise of AI actually lead to more human connection and collaboration? Recently, I was at the Houston Rodeo, attending a Chris Stapleton concert with 30 customers. One told me that she loves live music and couldn’t imagine ever going to an AI-generated concert. It made me think about the broader cultural context we’re living in — a world where just about anything can be automated; where it’s harder than ever to tell what’s real and what’s fake. Before we lose all hope, I see a world where this uncertainty is pulling people back into the physical world where they can interact face-to-face. Realness has never been more valuable. The same is happening in product management. AI will absolutely accelerate how we build. It generates ideas, prototypes faster, and can even predict what customers might need. But it can’t replace the core loop that drives great products: listening, understanding, building, and earning trust. Genuine people skills and real connections are where AI is weakest. At Checkr, we continue to invest in human connections through: - In-person Customer Advisory Boards. - Our adopt-a-customer program, where PMs are mapped to specific customers and join quarterly business reviews - Ongoing rolling research groups to stay in constant conversation with end users And PM fundamentals like active listening and asking “why” still matter just as much. Where AI does come in is speed. On my flight home from Houston, I was able to build and prototype a feature before landing in San Francisco, and put something tangible in front of that customer hours after receiving the feedback. Curious where others are landing on this. Will AI drive more customer conversations, or will real-life interactions matter even more?
