I used to think staying close to everything made me a better leader. I have learned the hard way that it doesn't. It just meant I hadn't done the work of building trust with my team. Now I look for how often people communicate with each other, not just with me. Whether problems come to me early or show up after they've already snowballed. The energy on team calls. Whether people are reaching out to one another for help or going it alone. All of that tells me more than any report or survey ever will. And the thing I had to learn the hard way is that when trust isn't there, people hide problems. They wait to be told what to do. As a leader, you feel the pull to get more involved, and that just makes everything worse. I'm a recovering control freak (ok, so not always in recovery 🤫) and letting go is still hard, but your team needs room to succeed and room to fail. Both matter. You cannot be everywhere and, if you are, you are burning yourself and your team out. Build the trust. Everything else will follow from there. What's one thing you've had to let go of as a leader?

May 2026If you're in Talent Acquisition and feeling uncertain about where the industry is heading, you are not alone. My take on it? Stop trying to compete with AI where you can't win. The technology will always beat you when it comes to screening, scheduling, and higher outreach. It's not even a close competition. However, AI cannot walk into a tense debrief and change the dynamic. It can't sit across from a hiring manager who has been burned before and earn back their trust. Those people skills come from years of real conversations, difficult searches, and mistakes you learned along the way. AI cannot beat you there. The TA Professionals who will matter most five years from now are the ones who know how to think, advise, and influence where it counts. So stop fighting AI where it's pointless and direct your energy to where you can win. What's one skill you're investing in this year to stay ahead of the trends? I'm curious...

Apr 2026AI is not a tech conversation; it's a workforce reality. This podcast featuring Marissa Geist and Jason Scheckner captures the shift well: AI isn’t just enabling work, it’s becoming part of the workforce itself. In Implementation and Bid Management, this is exactly the lens we bring - connecting what’s proposed to how it will actually come to life, with a clear focus on adoption and value realization. The real opportunity isn’t task replacement, it’s human elevation, and ensuring human and machine work together in a way that delivers outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gah9TzqZ #IlluminateTalent
Apr 2026This morning I had the pleasure of heading back to Roehampton University as a guest lecturer - and it felt great to be back on campus. It looked glorious in the sun, and a cool new library appearing behind the pond (can you tell I am jealous we didn't have this space when I was studying here?). I hosted a session for recent Masters graduates on personal brand, employer brand, and the future of work. There's no shortage of scary headlines right now. "AI replacing jobs." "Uncertainty for fresh graduates" and a labour market that feels harder to crack than ever. But here's what I shared with the group: there are positive stories out there too. There are real, impactful things graduates can do right now to stay ahead and prepare for the world of work. Thanks to Rachel Barrell and Jack De France for hosting me! University of Roehampton
Apr 2026More thoughts from the field: For the most part Talent Leaders are already seeing benefits for AI. Processes like interview scheduling/coordination, candidate communication drafting, job ad creation/optimizing, supply demand data aggregation etc. has reshaped the admin layer of TA. AI tools are giving time back to Talent and HR teams. It's real and happening now. For some TA shops, the freed up time disappears quickly into more activity, more manual reporting, more meetings, more rework. Things feel quicker, but results don’t materially change. This outcome is not great....it actually sucks. The leaders seeing real value are those intentional about reinvesting the into higher value engagement and activity like: * Building stronger partnerships with hiring managers through better intake and clearer expectations * Spending more time with leads and candidates...deeper conversations, stronger relationships, and a more human hiring experience * Making higher‑quality decisions, spending more time calibrating on skills, fit, and success The next challenge is harnessing this new capability to amplify impact and consistently drive better business outcomes, not just move faster.
