May 2026To those of you spending hours pouring over LinkedIn posts and job listings….. I hear you… it genuinely SUCKS. It’s like standing with a group of 500 similarly qualified people… all throwing darts at a tiny bullseye 300 yards away and praying one sticks. I’ve pour a lot of sweat and tears into my current role thinking that being great at what you do, especially at a huge multinational corporation is enough. Believe me…. It’s not. Network! Make work friends with everyone you can, learn what they do. Take on odd responsibilities. I recently learned my role, after 10 years, will be eliminated in the next two years… so i have time. Lots of people don’t get that luxury. But entering the job market in one’s mid~50s is a scary prospect. My previous two roles were in industries I had ZERO experience in and I got hired in as a director. Not because my resume fit some silly “unicorn” standard these crappy TA platforms apply based on buzz words and unrealistic sets of experiences that no one truly has all of (unless that are lying on their resume and we know that NEVER happens.). I got the jobs because I made relationships with people in previous roles who knew I was smart, and hard working, and willing. They trusted me and knew I could learn the job. There are a lot of things you can teach…. But will and humanity are hard to come by. I hope this helps people struggling in today’s market. I wish hiring managers could ACTUALLY meet people and not have to choose from a tiny sample that a program or a recruiter with limited knowledge of what the role REALLY does put in front of them. But until the process changes… lean on your friends, colleagues, former comworkers and your best bosses. I have faith that is where my next opportunity will come from…. Not some random shot in the dark to a blind post hoping I filled in the right words vs honestly showing the value I bring, Stay strong, stay positive.
