The Times provides some much needed practical (non tax) advice about how to make it as a tax exile. My favourites: Wear Loro Piana 1/4 zips and loafers without socks Drive a G-Wagon for the school run Shun people who are only 'rich on paper' Crowe UK https://lnkd.in/e8RPUvaK

May 2026A packaging levy here, a windfall tax there, throw in some changes to air passenger duty and you soon start to raise proper money. For many years UK government tax strategy has relied on levies and duties. Why? They are easier to hide, appear to be a tax on companies (though they will always be passed on to the consumer) and tend to be dressed up as a punishment for bad behaviour. However, the downside is now becoming apparent. Prices going up? Blame the duties and levies. Do some lobbying and remind the public its the government that is taking a big chunk of their hard earned. It works - green levies put onto energy bills were removed and added to general taxation in an attempt to make it look like energy bills were falling. In last couple of weeks we've seen calls for the removal of packaging tax, rates reform, landfill taxes which are pushing the cost of housing up and here is a plea to reduce airline taxes. What seemed like a good idea in a benign inflation environment, is proving politically toxic during a cost of living crisis. Crowe UK https://lnkd.in/eFwHwcqB
May 2026AI is moving fast. Governance isn’t and that gap matters. A few weeks ago, I joined an outstanding panel on Cyber & AI at the ISACA 2026 Conference, hosted as a BBC Question Time style session. With 800+ technology, security, and risk leaders in the room, it set the stage for a robust, no‑nonsense discussion on AI and security. The conversation quickly converged on three themes: ⚖️ Governance is playing catch‑up to AI 🛡️ AI is transforming the cyber threat landscape—offensively and defensively 📈 Is AI genuinely delivering enterprise value? The data told a powerful story: 📊 A Gartner CIO survey suggests that by 2028, Detection and Response will be largely automated powered by AI 🧠 Crowe’s live flash survey at our breakout session found that only 6% of practitioners would “somewhat” trust AI outputs in threat intelligence The takeaway was clear: 👉 AI without strong governance and accountability erodes trust and without trust, value is lost. If you’d like to learn more about AI’s impact on Threat Intelligence, or the work Crowe is doing with our partner IBM , feel free to reach out to Mike Kehoe or me. May 2026As a very old dog (probably 15 years old), Bob sometimes needs a pram to get around. He had to pay VAT at 20% on his state of the art wheels. If he were a human baby, it would be the same rate of VAT. It's a myth that prams are zero rated for humans (unless the child has a disability) Interestingly a baby car seat is classed safety equipment, with a VAT rate of 5%. Human prams that are also car seats have to have the VAT apportioned between the various components. Crowe UK
Apr 2026When the temporary becomes permanent it often causes problems, whether it's for 200 years or 2. The original promise of a sunset clause on income tax by William Pitt (the younger) is probably the longest standing case of a British politician reneging on something they said in parliament. 227 years and counting. In 2021 Digital Services Tax was introduced on the basis it was to be abolished in 2024. It wasn't, so its time to brace ourselves for some more #tariff fun. All tax is politics - and we shouldn't forget that, given what's coming next. Post 'Liberation Day' the UK was spared the worst of the US tariff regime. However, President Trump is committed to “stand up to countries that attack our incredible American tech companies”. The legislation that enables retaliatory taxes against those territories with DST's to be raised in is in place. Crowe UK highlighted this at the time. This has been brought into focus as the President's admiration for Keir Starmer has declined and the President is looking for reasons to rip up the trade agreement signed between the UK and US. Time to prepare for some more change? https://lnkd.in/esGeXDn5
