At CtrlS Datacenters , we made a clear decision several years ago: no freshwater use in our new datacenters. Every new facility we build is designed to operate without drawing from freshwater sources. Instead, we are investing in alternative approaches, including treating and reusing raw or non-potable water, contributing to cleaner local ecosystems rather than adding stress to them. This is a responsibility we all bear. Because, as an industry, our ability to scale AI infrastructure will depend on whether we can earn and maintain trust. The datacenter industry is entering a new phase. It won’t be defined by capital or scale, but by credibility. As AI infrastructure expands, scrutiny is increasing – from regulators, communities, and stakeholders. The questions on all of our minds are becoming more direct: Who benefits? Who bears the cost? And what is the true impact on local resources? One of the most important of these questions is water. In many parts of the world, freshwater is already under pressure. Yet large-scale infrastructure continues to rely on it as a default input. This is where the industry must be honest. Efficiency is not enough. Optimisation is not enough. We need to rethink the fundamentals. Are we designing infrastructure that only scales, or infrastructure that communities can sustain?
Apr 2026Many are worried about the possibility of AI replacing people. Some organisations are already doing so. AI is a powerful tool. It is continuously improving productivity, automating repetitive work, and enabling new ways of operating at scale. Ignoring that would be short-sighted. But replacing people should not be the default response to technological progress. Because organisations are not built on efficiency alone. They are built on judgment, context, relationships, and trust. AI can process information. It cannot fully understand nuance. It cannot replace accountability, nor can it build culture. We declared a few years ago at CtrlS Datacenters that not a single job will be lost in our organisation because of AI. We have made a commitment to continuously retrain our people to meet the evolving demands of the industry today. Leaders have a responsibility to adopt technology thoughtfully and to reskill teams where possible. We must ensure that progress does not come at the expense of the human connection that makes organisations work in the first place. Technology will continue to evolve. How we choose to use it will define the kind of organisations we build.
