When I meet with customers, I never ask them what we should build. I ask them what they are trying to solve. The answers consistently revolve around AI challenges: → How do we prepare for a flood of AI-generated zero days? → How do we govern and secure AI development where anyone can create software? → How do we expand coverage over new categories of AI application risk? The Shift Left model is broken. Reacting sooner is reacting too late. Security must operate in parallel, as agentic as development, as autonomous as AI threats. This is the foundation of Cycode ’s Shift to AI manifesto. But a manifesto is only as good as the movement it propels. That’s why I’m so proud to be part of the team advancing the three core tenets that make self-protecting software and the Shift to AI possible: Control to shape the agent before the agent shapes the code; Context to bring security awareness to agents and build trust; and Autonomy to orchestrate AI security teammates and transform context into kinetic security. Shift Left is dead. Not slowing down. Not evolving. Dead. Here’s why: Shift Left assumed humans write code and humans find bugs, just earlier in the process. That assumption is gone. AI agents now write code at machine speed. AI agents now discover vulnerabilities at machine speed. AI agents now develop exploits at machine speed. “Earlier” is no longer a strategy. You can’t run a foot race against a Formula 1 car by starting 10 minutes ahead. Security has to become agentic. Last week we published the 2026 Product Security All-Stars report. The response reminded me why I started Cycode . These are exactly the conversations I built this company around. Security leaders who refuse to accept that the old model is good enough. The threat landscape has fundamentally changed. Attackers now have access to the same AI models your developers do. Exploit development that took weeks now takes hours and will soon take minutes. Here is the math that gets lost: AI doesn't just reduce risk per line of code, it dramatically increases the number of lines created. Even a lower rate of risk at 100x the volume is still a larger total attack surface than before. The teams that are winning changed how they work. Unpopular opinion: AI finding more vulnerabilities won't make AppSec easier. It'll make it harder. Here's the math problem hiding inside every optimistic AI security story: cleaner code at 100x the volume is still a larger attack surface than messier code at 1x. The per-line defect rate drops. The absolute number of issues grows. More findings don't create more remediation capacity, they create a clearer picture of the same constrained reality. The bottleneck was never detection.
