May 2026It was an honor to be there and an even greater honor to be besides such great leaders as Gerry Bradley and Josh Heird . We are trying to keep the conversation going and impact necessary change.
May 2026Healthcare platforms have a leadership problem they keep misidentifying as a talent shortage. The talent is there. The problem is what they're selecting for. Here's the pattern that plays out with enough regularity to have earned its own entry in the catalogue of expensive mistakes: A physical therapist — or a hygienist, or a nurse practitioner — is exceptional at their clinical work. But what distinguishes them isn't just their clinical judgment. It's the way the rest of the team functions when they're in the building. New clinicians develop faster. Patients have lower dropout rates. Near-miss conversations happen. The culture is stronger. This person is a clinical leader. Irreplaceable at the clinic level. So the platform promotes them. The title changes. The pay goes up. The best clinician in the room leaves the room. And the informal mentorship — the case review at lunch, the check-in after a difficult patient, the modeling of how to handle a hard conversation — disappears. Not because it was cancelled. Because it left when the senior clinician did. The clinic got a new manager. The patients got a less experienced clinician. And the platform called it a career ladder. New post on The Operator — the Leadership episode. What healthcare platforms are selecting for, what they're developing, and what it's costing them.
