10 years ago, Jon Lavender Justin Cavinee and I founded Dragos, Inc. and I remain deeply appreciative to be allowed to serve the mission in this wonderful community. The operational technology/industrial control systems cybersecurity community has always been special. Often overlooked, often underserved, but always vital. Our infrastructure from electric grids, to manufacturing plants, to water system, to data centers, and more make the modern world possible. They impact our families. They should be off limits from cyber attacks. I have spent a lot of time thinking what 10 years means to me. The people who said it wasn’t possible to build an OT focused cybersecurity technology company were an interesting voice along the way but as we became the first company in OT valued at $1b+ the voices faded. But valuations have never been what drive the team at Dragos. It’s our amazing community. Our customers and partners. It’s been countering those who seek to do them harm. I’ve tried my best as CEO to navigate a lot of things with this amazing team. Building a company that has had to navigate a global pandemic, a war in Europe, market instability, competitive forces, and geopolitical uncertainty were the backdrop to an already difficult task. But a worthy mission. I have constantly come back to the idea that we need to build this company to last 100+ years. But what does that mean to build a 100 year company? The mindset is that we must have a mission worthy of being around that long - and we do - and we must build without ourselves in mind. Hitting the plan, exceeding the forecast, quarterly and annual goals - those are all just the basics. To build a 100 year company you have to give it foundations like culture and values but you must take a mindset into putting effort in you will never fully see through or gain from personally. Because we won’t be here in 100 years. All the teammates I trust and depend on today who could carry Dragos forward after I’m not here - they won’t be here either. The people at Dragos 100 years from now will be people we’ve never met. We need to instill in them the values and focus on the mission and give them foundations to be successful. To make sure that they are building a successful business but one that is worthy of the mission as they won’t be protecting my kids or anyone we know today but focused on protecting their grandkids and the people of the future. People I can’t possibly do anything but want to be successful because I don’t know them, what they represent, their views on life, etc. I’ve challenged my team to think long term while owning the moment. I have spent a lot of time and energy into thinking about how to give Dragos permanence and autonomy. Capital structures, investors, etc they are all important but temporary. Values and culture will let us be true to the mission, to be worthy of it. Thank you for being on our journey to build a 100 year company and in doing so safeguard civilization.
