LinkedInSovereign Investment Governance

How can Ghanaian pension funds tap into the largest IPO on the African continent? Right now, they can’t and it highlights a critical flaw in our regulatory framework. The current asset allocation guidelines leave little to no room for geographical diversification, ultimately risking sub-optimal retirement outcomes for ordinary Ghanaians. The Current Roadblocks 1. The 5% Hurdle: While a 5% external investment is technically permitted, it requires Presidential approval through the Minister of Finance. The result? Zero utilization by Trustees and fund managers. The 70% Cap: 2. Fund managers attempting to build offshore investment solutions to bypass this are restricted to a 70% limit by the SEC and BoG under the latest Foreign Investment Directive. The Blueprint for Change: Look East Ghana’s NPRA and financial regulators should adopt the model currently thriving in Kenya and the wider East African market: Regional Harmonisation: Treat the entire sub-region as the local market. In East Africa, pension allocations to Government Bonds, equities, and alternatives automatically include all assets across the region. Regulatory Sandboxes: Implement a market-led sandbox approach to give special license status to offshore mutual funds, much like the success seen with SIB’s Mansa X fund. The Bottom Line Modernising these guidelines to embrace regional diversification will unlock real growth in the Ghanaian market and allow asset allocators to deliver the resilient, high-performing portfolios that Ghanaian retirees deserve. #Pensions #GhanaFinance #AssetManagement #Investing #AfricaBusiness #NPRA #FinancialRegulation

Back to the classroom for the second time. I'm looking forward to learning from what Darren Johnson and Peter Bawuah, CFA have installed for us. Both have been there and done it and come with a vast amount of experience.

Spent some time this week listening to UnitedHealth, Elevance, and Molina earnings calls. The obvious takeaway is margin pressure. But what stood out to me is how aggressively the largest players are reshaping how they operate, not just trimming costs. It feels less like a typical cycle and more like a shift in how these organizations are built going forward.

CMS-0053-F is final — and the deadline will arrive quicker than you would think! The Claims Attachments rule mandates standardized electronic exchange using X12 275/277 transactions, HL7 CDA clinical documents, and digital signatures, replacing the costly workflows still common today. Plans that treat this as a compliance checkbox will scramble. Those building toward intelligent attachment correlation and workflow automation now will come out ahead — both operationally and financially. Worth a read. 👇

The competition is heating up! Sale #2 for Teo is his old bike, $140, bringing his total to $540 in two sales. Luca has 8 gumball machines and $550 in quarters, and has just bought 3 more machines to put in another pizza place and a restaurant near a sports field where a lot of kids play soccer and baseball. This feels like season finale. Tune in for the next season of The Brothers to see where our young entrepreneurs take their little business… 😊

Little brother (14) got inspired (or jealous..?) and started his own business, finding things to sell on Facebook marketplace. His first deal just closed, $400 for 4 chairs. Goes to show how a little inspiration and friendly competition goes a long way in showing kids (and all of us?) what’s possible. Let’s see how the slow and steady gumball machine business compares to the lumpy business of opportunity spotting. Either way, I’m a very happy papa watching my kiddos explore what’s possible in the world.

One of the great people to follow and listen to (and bump into at a Rise conference!) in the RA space. Thanks for the perspective Ava!
