Ayurveda, but on a tube. In 1952 Parel, Bombay, Keshav Vishnu Pendharkar — a man trained in traditional Indian medicine — started a small unit grinding herbs. His first product: Vicco Vajradanti, a black tooth-powder made from 18 herbs. Colgate was the default. Everyone brushed with it. Vicco asked a different question: why are Indians using a foreign formula when we have 3,000 years of dental remedies? The product grew slowly. No shortcuts. No foreign collaborations. In 1971, he launched Vicco Turmeric Skin Cream — haldi in a tube, something every Indian grandmother already believed in. Then came the jingle. The wedding-day bride applying Vicco. "Vicco Turmeric, nahi cosmetic. Vicco Turmeric Ayurvedic cream." Seven decades later, the company is still private, still family-run. Son Gajanan and grandson Sanjeev manage it. No IPO. No PE. No acquisition. A Parel herbalist who refused to dress up his ayurveda as cosmetics — and became the most trusted tube in the Indian bathroom. Some founders build companies. The rarest ones refuse every exit and pass a living product to the next generation.
