May 2026May is Physiotherapy Month. I've been a physiotherapist for 20 years now, and looking back, the word that captures it best is connection. It started at McMaster University . I did my PT degree there, and the place has held onto me ever since, first as a student, then as an admissions evaluator, clinical preceptor, and now as a sessional instructor and faculty advisor. Mac taught me how to think about patients, how to work in teams, and how to ask better questions. Two decades later, I still walk into that building and feel like I'm home. The connection piece showed up in my first job and it's been true in every setting since; outpatient clinics, long-term care, people's living rooms (homecare), hospital partnerships, boardrooms. The work changes. The connection part doesn't. Connection to a patient who finally tells you what's actually going on, because you're sitting with them and you're not in a rush. Connection to a caregiver who's been holding it together for months and just needs someone to listen. Connection to colleagues across disciplines who see your patient from a different angle and help you do better work. It also means meeting people where they are, in their language, in their culture, in whatever they've been through before they ever got to you. Our profession reaches as far as that goes, and not further. These days, most of my work is on the system side, connecting home care to hospitals, funding to the people it's meant for, and the next generation of PTs to a profession that needs them. Different work, same idea. To every PT, PTA, student, educator, and researcher out there, thank you for the work you do every day. The connections you make matter, even when no one's measuring them. Happy Physiotherapy Month. #PhysiotherapyMonth #Physiotherapy McMaster Faculty of Science McMaster University School of Rehabilitation Science Alumni Association McMaster
May 2026On Nurses Week 2026 and on the heels of Mother's Day, I want to acknowledge my wonderful mother, who is shown in the image below at her nursing capping ceremony (front row center), and her parents (my grandparents) standing proudly behind her. My mother worked as a nurse for 40+ years in Canada (and a bit in the US) after finishing nursing school in the Philippines. She practiced in a variety of settings including acute care, rehab, LTC and home care. It was a rewarding career and allowed her to immigrate to Canada, create a family and provide a fruitful life for all of us. It wasn't easy, but it was always worth it. She inspired me to consider a healthcare profession. I can say with confidence that I wouldn't be who I am today without the example she set. To all the nurses who are celebrating this week, you are inspiring the next generation of healthcare providers! Thank you for your service.
