Straight Talk: Humanoid Robotics – Current and Future Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics I’ve just had the opportunity to give my talk on this topic at this year’s HANNOVER MESSE , and there could hardly be a better venue for it. Walking around this year’s fair, you see a great many bipedal and wheeled humanoids. Developments are happening at breakneck speed, and the potential applications are diverse. In the presentation, I highlighted the three main areas of research in the context of humanoid robots for manufacturing and logistics applications from the perspective of Fraunhofer IPA : 1. Perception, thinking, acting – the robots’ ‘brain’, so to speak 2. Safety & Security 3. End-effectors, particularly robotic hands, for the necessary interaction with the physical environment The many humanoid demos on display in Hanover confirm our view: individual, exciting use cases are being demonstrated, but due to their software and hardware (particularly end-effectors), they currently still fall short of high expectations in terms of flexibility. Furthermore, questions regarding safety and economic viability remain relevant.
