Yesterday, with my colleagues I visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial —a place of profound sorrow and solemnity, dedicated to honoring those whose lives were taken during one of history’s darkest chapters. As a French national, I remain forever deeply ashamed by the role of France before, during and immediately after the genocide of the Tutsi. France's responsibility was acknowledged by President Emmanuel Macron in 2021. Standing amidst the quiet halls and gardens now the home of more than 250,000 victims, I felt an overwhelming sense of grief, but also of responsibility: to remember, to honor, and to ensure that the stories of the victims are never forgotten. 32 years ago, as the genocide was taking place in Rwanda I was myself in Bosnia for AFP , covering other ethnic-based barbaric acts. Back then, I witnessed firsthand how hatred and violence can devastate communities and tear apart lives, echoing the tragic patterns seen in Rwanda and with the Nazi regime. This experience brought back powerful memories of my visits to Auschwitz and Birkenau. Walking through these sites, I was reminded again of humanity’s capacity for cruelty, yet also of the resilience and dignity of those who suffered as illustrated by today's Rwanda vibrant society. The memorials, though separated by continents and histories, share a common purpose: they urge us to confront the past and promise to not let such atrocities happen again. With my colleagues from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the Ministry of Health of Rwanda, we stand together against hatred and strive to build a world where such tragedies are never repeated.
