The Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, co-hosted by Presidents William Samoei Ruto, PhD and Emmanuel Macron , brought the vast potential of a continent onto the global agenda. Africa is already home to nearly one in five people on the planet, and by 2050 it will be one in four. It holds the world's youngest population, vast renewable energy potential, much of the world's agricultural land, and many of the critical minerals the global transition runs on. It is also where borrowing costs run several times higher than elsewhere. Where debt servicing is forcing countries to forgo the very investments in development and climate they need to reach their fullest potential. At Green Climate Fund , we are supporting the highest aspirations of African countries. Our work is grounded in strategic investment partnerships, coordination among financial institutions, domestic capital mobilization, and creating value at the national and regional level. Africa is where we invest in the most as a share of our portfolio. More than $7.5 billion of our own resources are at work on the continent, unlocking $25 billion in total investment. We are providing the patient risk capital partners cannot find elsewhere in this architecture. We are working closely with countries to build institutional capacity. We are championing country and regional investment platforms that bring public and private, domestic and international finance together at the scale this moment demands. This is a vision for the future. And it is a vision the continent deserves.
May 2026The Green Climate Fund is making good on its promise to communities and partners in the countries we serve. In 2023, we committed to ambitious reforms aimed at maximizing efficiency and impact — and reaching our full potential. Apr 2026This week at the #WBGSpringMeetings , leaders from Multilateral Climate Funds and Multilateral Development Banks convened for the first time. It was a dialogue that could not wait. Climate shocks are not future risks but a reality here and now. In Asia last year, storms caused $25 billion in losses. These are hits to growth, to fiscal space, and to stability. Throughout the developing world, MDBs and MCFs play an essential role. 98% of adaptation finance is public, and over a third flows through the MDBs. The MCFs are enablers of that system. We de-risk, we catalyze, and we unlock investment at a scale none of us could reach alone. Our $250 million commitment to Asian Development Bank (ADB) ’s Glaciers to Farms program helped mobilize $3.3 billion across nine countries. As Chair of the MCF Heads Group, the Green Climate Fund is committed to advancing this agenda. This week, MCF Heads also agreed on concrete collective actions for the year ahead, and we are ready to work shoulder to shoulder with MDBs, the private sector, and countries. The economic case for MDB-MCF collaboration is settled. Now let's get to work.
