A few weeks ago I wrote about the tension I felt reading about AI-driven layoffs and whether we were moving too slowly at Green Dot Corporation . That post got me thinking about a specific data point I came across from Anthropic. Their research projects a 72% disruption factor for sales roles, with 18% AI coverage already observed today. That number caught me by surprise. I have spent a lot of my career in go-to-market and sales leadership, and my instinct is that the picture is more nuanced than a single number suggests. AI will almost certainly handle the low end of the funnel well. Lead generation, outreach, booking appointments. The repetitive, high volume work that today takes real headcount. But enterprise sales? I have a harder time seeing it. There are too many moving pieces, too much relationship building, too much reading a room. What I think is more likely is that AI makes salespeople more efficient, not obsolete. It handles the cold, automated work and frees up human sellers to focus on the warm conversations, discussing your customer’s vision or pain points, that actually close deals. Which leads to a more interesting question for any company thinking about their go-to-market strategy. If AI handles more of the process, how do you differentiate? If your competitors are running the same AI agents, sending the same automated sequences, and optimizing the same funnels, where does your edge come from? The companies that win in an AI-driven sales world will not be the ones who automated the sales process fully. They will be the ones who stayed human when everyone else stopped trying.
