Today is a big day in South African public health. 🎉 The District Health Barometer 2024/25 has just been launched, and I have the honour of contributing the chapter on Pharmaceutical Personnel per 100 000 uninsured Population. As a pharmacist working in the public sector in KwaZulu-Natal, writing this chapter was deeply personal. The headline number is 16.7 pharmaceutical personnel per 100 000 uninsured population but behind that figure lies an important story: pharmacists account for just 35% of the ~9 500 public sector pharmaceutical personnel. The rest: pharmacist technicians and assistants form the backbone of daily medicine service delivery, especially in districts where pharmacist posts sit vacant. South Africa's pharmaceutical workforce is being sustained by mid-level cadres. That is both a tribute to their skill and a call to action for better workforce planning, investment, and recognition.
