Housecall Pro is an app that wraps most of their daily functions into it.
View source postIt was supposed to be a 3-month experiment, but those results are in and the promise is too great to stop the “art thing” now. I’ll back up. In January, I put in my notice at Housecall Pro . It was my first time leaving a job without another lined up. “What are you doing next?” colleagues asked. “I”m really excited to organize our mudroom,” I shared, with surprisingly little sheepishness. “I’ve also been painting, and some of my works are starting to sell, so I might do a bit more of that.” It’s not that I wanted off the treadmill. I love running fast. I loved the thrill of incident command; I wasn’t tired of the ever-evolving arms race with bad actors, the challenge of evolving platform-wide systems with brilliant colleagues to stop fraud earlier and faster. I just needed a water break after 6 years (and 1 pandemic) of sprinting with little kids at home. So Zachary Rowe and I agreed that - for 3 months - I’d take a “step back”: absorb more at home while he doubled-down on work travel and we collectively tightened our budget. I’d invest modestly in Allison Lipp Art. And then I’d look for a new, real job when the art sales inevitably failed to manifest. For fun, my “board member of 1” set a $10k Q1 sales goal. I scoffed, and we both laughed - knowing even a single sale to a stranger would be a win (and possibly even reason to continue beyond the trial period). A couple weeks in, that first sale to a stranger came. It was a small, $25 painting - but I was over the moon. Soon after, a law office across the country bought a larger work I’d nervously priced at $450 on Etsy. (I spent 5 hours figuring out how to ship it.) Before long, I had converted my son’s playroom into a studio (thanks, Quinn!) and set up “Office Supplies” as an account in Quickbooks. I even quietly crossed that $10k goal sometime in mid-March. And it’s only sped up since. More importantly: + My Oura ring sleep debt has been “Low” or “None” for the past 12 weeks + My kids have gotten adequate medical attention on 7 sick days and counting (I’m penning this post on one of them) and adequate ski turns on teacher PD days + Zach’s on-track to PR in the Colfax half-marathon (ask him about the carbon-plated shoes he’s now eyeing…) + ^ I’ll be running that same half - my first in six years + Quinn finally has a parent who chaperones field trips Needless to say, our family’s system health is improved. And I can’t not continue investing in that. I post this “update” with some hesitation. I recognize the privilege that enabled this leap and its continuation. I’ve been fortunate to work at companies and for managers (several, parents themselves) incredibly supportive of the flexibility parents need. This is far from a “the corporate world doesn’t work for working parents” post; I miss aspects of it and haven’t written off a return. But it is a post that celebrates recognizing when shifts are needed, and finding ones that work. It’s amazing how expansive it can be. ☀️
