One thing I wish more people understood about Ophthalmic lens dispensing? is that Apples for Apples; Surfacing a minus lens will not make it any thinner than stock lenses! Minus lenses are thinnest at centre, and you can only go SO thin before you lose optical performance. We have to maintain the same curvature across front and back at all times to preserve the integrity of the prescription. Reduce thickness at the edge.... you have to reduce at centre to maintain curve Changing frame (smaller and rounder frames as simplified rules of thumb works well) can often get you thinner edge thickness. Going hi-index for minus lenses is the answer to making the lens thinner ALL across the surface. More on this in my recorded webinar on good frame and lens selection for thin good-looking lenses here.... https://lnkd.in/dKD7ZnDz

Apr 2026Pro dispensing tip. In a training session today I was asked, "what's the best corridor to use?" The answer of course, is "the best one for the patient standing in front of you" In Progressive (PAL) lens dispensing. Understanding the basics of Minkwitz law will help a lot, short corridors can be great as we hit the extra add quickly. However as with many things in Optics, there are trade-offs. At Hoya we don't believe in dictating your corridor choice, this is a dispensing consideration. Put vertical heights on pupil center, don't "fudge" them, thus giving you room to play with corridor length to your patient's benefit. For more info on the below, or other areas of dispensing, please contact me or one of my knowledgeable colleagues for a training session.
