New Human Rights Watch report: The EU exports surveillance tech to governments around the world with well-documented histories of using similar tech to spy on activists, journos and other critical voices. And we've got the receipts. The EU has a regulation that should control these exports, but doesn't. We sent FOI requests to every EU country and the Commission for export data that states must collect and report back to European institutions. We found that EU countries regularly license exports to destinations that are likely to use those tools to crack down on dissent, and that the European Commission has taken steps to avoid transparency on surveillance exports. We’re calling on European Institutions to strengthen human rights, due diligence and transparency provisions of the regulation, now. Full report here: https://lnkd.in/erRjFr5R
