Four & a half years after the publication of my 2nd book "Ten Laws of Operational Risk" it's an absolute pleasure to still be receiving pictures of it from readers around the world. The picture below is from Peru - I love the guinea pig mascot. 🙂 My thanks to Ricardo for both buying my book & sending to me this picture. If you want to learn more about how Operational Risk actually behaves, in order to manage it more effectively, then "Ten Laws of Operational Risk" is widely available, including from Amazon: https://lnkd.in/e4jB_36h All views expressed are my own, and not those of ICBC Standard Bank. #TenLawsofOpRisk #RiskMinds #ORX #IRM #OperationalRisk #Risk #RiskManagement
Apr 2026"How can effective Operational Risk management genuinely deliver commercial value?" After almost a year of research & writing I'll post the final version of this paper at 9am (GMT) on Sunday, 19th April. The initial development of Operational Risk management, in the early 1990s, was not driven by regulatory requirements, but instead by a quest for commercial value by a number of leading banks. When these pioneering practices, however, were subsequently enshrined in Basel 2, in 2004, it was at a point in time when they were still evolving. Whilst incorporation into regulation undoubtedly accelerated the roll-out of Operational Risk management across the industry, it may have done so at the expense of the commercial objectives of the early pioneers. Consequently, my paper considers how Operational Risk management can return to its roots of adding commercial value. Demonstrating the commercial value delivered by effective Operational Risk management will always be challenging, due to its all-pervasive and “unusually fat-tailed” nature - its materiality is often only clear when something has gone wrong, and risk managers rarely receive the credit for crises averted – the “Black Swan ethical problem”. [i] Despite this, effective Operational Risk management can genuinely support: ▪️ The delivery of new revenue streams and cost savings; ▪️ The preservation of credit ratings; and ▪️ The raising for returns on capital, all of which are causes for celebration. Prior to this paper being published next Sunday, if you want to learn more about how Operational Risk actually behaves, in order to manage it more effectively, then my book - "Ten Laws of Operational Risk" - is widely available, including from Amazon: https://lnkd.in/e4jB_36h All views expressed are my own, and not those of ICBC Standard Bank, nor of AI.
