May 2026Leveraging my experience at the forefront of flood mapping innovation at ICEYE, it was an absolute pleasure to present our recent analysis at the EGU26 General Assembly. Our work investigates the "observability gap" and the true capacity of different satellite constellations to image highly dynamic disasters from space. Two things became remarkably clear from our global analysis: First, high-frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is non-negotiable, as extreme weather often completely blinds optical satellites during critical moments. Second, the ability to dynamically image specific areas of the Earth is just as crucial. Systematic orbits from public constellations like Sentinel and Landsat offer essential programmatic revisit times and act as a vital historical baseline. However, to capture a flood at its critical peak duration—when waters crest and maximum damage occurs—we need the active tasking and rapid revisit capabilities of agile constellations like ICEYE. Ultimately, this is not about trading one system for the other, but working in a multi-source synergy. By augmenting programmatic baselines with on-demand commercial SAR, we can close the observability gap and provide the best possible information exactly where and when it matters most. This approach may work as a template for informing future remote sensing missions while helping hydrologists and disaster response community understand the technical limits of capturing complete flood events.
