Last week I presented our work at EGU2026 in Vienna! I presented "Stage-wise ConvLSTM Sequential Transfer Learning for Hierarchical Crop Type Mapping in Senegal's Smallholder Systems". The challenge: mapping crops in dryland smallholder systems is hard — cloud cover, tiny irregular fields, mixed cropping, and the persistent crop–fallow confusion that biases food-security indicators across Sub-Saharan Africa. Our approach: a coarse-to-fine ConvLSTM curriculum that transfers spatiotemporal features across three stages — cropland vs. fallow → agronomic families → fine-grained crop types — using Planet NICFI (~5 m) imagery and in-situ labels from Senegal's 2020 and 2023 rainfed seasons. #EGU26 #EarthObservation #DeepLearning #ConvLSTM #FoodSecurity #Senegal #ICRISAT #CGIAR #SERVIR ICRISAT CGIAR Digital Transformation SERVIR Global Collaborative Centre De Suivi Écologique
May 2026Proud to share this — and even prouder to be part of it. 🌱 On 7th April, we launched the **India Policy Innovation Hub**, which I co-lead from International Crops Research Institute For The Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) side with Shahidur Rashid from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) under the CGIAR Policy Innovations Science Program. The Hub addresses a persistent gap, bringing researchers, policymakers, development practitioners, and other stakeholders onto a single co-creation platform to translate evidence into actionable agrifood policy. ICAR- Indian Council of Agricultural Research and NITI Aayog are the key institutional co-anchors of the #IndiaPolicyInnovationHub . The launch dialogue on **"Evidence-Led Food Systems Transformation Policies in the Context of #ViksitBharat "** at NASC Complex, New Delhi, brought together CGIAR, ICAR, and senior government leadership to co-create evidence-led pathways. I shared insights on #cropdiversification and the role of #millets and #pulses for human and environmental well-being. Our roadmap ahead: ✅ Onboarding key stakeholders across government, research, and development ✅ Mapping evidence and identifying critical gaps ✅ Co-creating policy innovations through #PolicyLabs in selected states Thank you to Prof Ramesh Chand Member NITI Ayog Prof Ashok Gulati,Dr Raghvendra Bhatta and Dr P.K. Joshi for your guiding words and highlighting the importance and expectations from this hub, Dr Himanshu Pathak , DG ICRISAT for chairing the high-level session, and to colleagues Shri Sanjay Agarwal, Devesh Roy Nedumaran Swamikannu , Kumara Charyulu , and Dr. Abhishek Das GIZ India WRI India , FAO and several participants for enriching the dialogue. Special thanks to Dr Raka Saxena for formaly launching the Hub. Many thanks to Clemens Breisinger Dr Mamata Pradhan Rajalakshmi Nirmal for their key contributions. The work begins now and I believe this will genuinely matter for India's agrifood transformation.
