May 2026Good intentions can still do harm when they turn into empty promises. I learned that during a layoff. The messages of support meant more than I expected. A quick “thinking of you” from someone in my network seemed like small things at first glimpse, but they made the uncertainty feel a little less heavy. Made me feel less alone. But there was another kind of message I remember just as clearly, though for other reasons. The people who said they’d have something for me soon. That they’d follow up in a few days or a few weeks. That they wanted to talk through an opportunity. People I knew. People I trusted to mean it. And then... nothing. No follow-up. No reply when I checked in. The opportunity, and sometimes the person, just quietly disappeared. For a while, I thought that was unique to me. Then I started helping a few friends who’d recently been laid off, and almost every one of them described the same thing. I don’t think it usually comes from bad intentions. When someone learns you’ve lost your job, they want to help. They want to say something hopeful. So they reach for an offer, a lead or a promise before they’ve really thought through whether they can deliver it. Thing is, when you’re out of work, those promises don’t feel small. They feel like a lifeline. You hold onto them. You build a little hope around them. You adjust your expectations, your energy and sometimes even your next steps. And when they evaporate, it can feel worse than if the offer had never been made. So if you want to support someone who has lost their job, be honest about what you can actually offer. “I don’t have a lead right now, but I’m happy to introduce you to people I know” is far more helpful than “I’ll have something for you soon.” “I can review your resume this week” is better than “Let’s talk sometime.” “I’m thinking of you” is enough if that’s what you genuinely have to give at the moment. A small, real gesture beats a big, empty one every time. And if you say you’ll follow up, please, follow up. People remember those who showed up. #career #helpinghand #followthrough #promises #brokenpromises

Apr 2026I just filmed a quick video from the conference floor. But first, my three actual rules for working a conference: 1. Never get stuck on the boat cruise. You know the one. Two hours. Nowhere to go. Trapped next to someone who wants to tell you about their product roadmap for the entire ride. If you cannot leave, you cannot find the conversation that matters. Always have an exit. 2. Walk with your head up. Not to look important. Because you have no idea whose name tag or face you are about to walk past. I have met some of the most interesting people in my career while walking between sessions. The hallway is where the real conference happens. 3. Dress down. Look too polished and everyone assumes you have budget. Next thing you know you are collecting pitches all day from people who think you are the financial decision maker. Dress like you belong but not like you are signing cheques. Your wallet will thank you. Conferences are not about the sessions. They are about the conversations you would never have had otherwise. Lift your head. Look around. You have no idea who is standing right next to you. #Networking #ConferenceTips #CareerDevelopment #Leadership #ProfessionalGrowth #SegmentOfOne
