The European Commission ’s announcement today of a harmonised, Europe-wide digital age verification app has understandably caused a stir. Almost immediately, I saw variations of the exact same, highly valid question popping up across my network: "Why build a standalone EU-wide age verification app when the broader EUDI Wallet rollout is already underway? Aren't we just confusing the market?" It is easy to view this announcement as a distraction from the core #eIDAS 2.0 mission or as a sign of institutional fragmentation. I see it entirely differently. I see it as a sensible, pragmatic execution and a crucial pivot towards commercial reality. Here is why this "shortcut" is actually the catalyst the #EUDI Wallet needs: 1. The "Swiss Army Knife" Fallacy For too long, the industry has operated under the delusion that we can cold-start a massive sovereign infrastructure by handing every citizen a complex digital Swiss Army knife on day one. But as we have seen with the most successful digital deployments globally - particularly in the Nordic payment ecosystem - you do not build a market with complexity. You capture the market by solving one high-friction problem flawlessly, and then you build the ecosystem on top of that success. 2. The Ultimate Catalyst for the Verifier A sovereign wallet sitting dormant on a smartphone is useless. Adoption requires the private sector - the Verifiers (Service Providers) - to have a burning commercial incentive to integrate. Protecting minors online and complying with strict new platform liabilities is that burning platform. By delivering a laser-focused age verification tool, we give these relying parties a frictionless way to shed their data liability and eliminate the risks of AI-driven fraud. 3. Building ON a Success Whether this rolls out as a standalone app or a dedicated module within early-mover national wallets (public or private), the strategic outcome is the same. You acquire millions of active users and establish the integration pipes with the private sector. Once that "Chain of Trust" is operational and widely adopted, evolving that user base into a fully-fledged EUDI Wallet is no longer a cold start - it is a logical, incremental upgrade. Mandates will always create compliance, but only high-utility, frictionless experiences drive actual adoption. The Commission is not abandoning the EUDI Wallet ambition; they are deploying the exact tactical wedge needed to guarantee its success. We must stop trying to build a success from scratch and instead focus on going from success to success. Do you agree?
