Last week I participated in DX Annual in San Francisco. The key take away: AI usage is up 65%, but PR throughput rose only by 7.76%. That data point — from the DX 400-company benchmark framed the entire day. The consensus from BNY, Vanguard, Airbnb, Intercom, and Dropbox: AI is delivering. But the bottleneck has moved — out of coding/development and into everything around it. A few things that stuck with me: → Vanguard: on a representative feature, the agent did 2 days of work. The organization then added 14 days of waiting — design review, security queue, deployment approval. The agent was fast. The organization was slow. → Airbnb's heavy users (4+ hrs/day with AI) are seeing +106% PR throughput over two years. Comparable engineers at under 4 hrs averaged +29%. → Dropbox retired PR throughput as their north star. New one: Time-to-Ship. When AI doubles output volume, PR count stops telling you whether customer value increased. → Airbnb, Intercom, and Dropbox all built internal agent platforms with plugin marketplaces instead of standardizing on one vendor. Intercom's has 213 contributors in 6.5 months. → 75% of designers and PMs now use AI coding tools. The definition of "developer" is expanding fast. #AI #SoftwareEngineering #DeveloperExperience #EngineeringLeadership #DXAnnual
