During the recently concluded International Air Transport Association (IATA) Wings of Change Americas 2026, we were pleased to convene an important discussion on aviation decarbonization in Latin America, focusing on two essential and complementary pillars: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and CORSIA. Joined by distinguished panelists: Juan José Tohá (LATAM Airlines), Paula DAROCA ARCAS (Airbus), Juan Carlos Arredondo Brun (Abatable), and Agustina Cundari (IETA), we provided insights highlighting both the challenges and opportunities ahead in the decarbonization of aviation. The discussion reinforced a critical reality: the challenge is no longer ambition, but execution. Latin America has the potential to become a global leader, both as a producer of SAF and as a supplier of high-integrity carbon credits under Article 6. However, unlocking this opportunity requires coherent, investment-oriented policy frameworks aligned with global standards. SAF and CORSIA must advance together. SAF is the long-term pathway to reduce emissions at source, while CORSIA remains the only global, harmonized market-based measure addressing international aviation emissions today. For policymakers, the priority is clear: enable investment, ensure regulatory alignment, and safeguard the competitiveness and connectivity that aviation delivers across the region. The next two years will be decisive. With the right policy choices, Latin America can position itself at the forefront of aviation’s energy transition. At IATA, we remain committed to working with governments and industry partners to support a pragmatic, cost-effective, and globally aligned pathway to net zero. #Aviation #Sustainability #SAF #CORSIA #EnergyTransition #LatinAmerica #WOCA2026
