Jun 2026Talking about energy…. Yesterday I published a couple of posts talking about the (in my opinion) sorely needed shift to electricity to decarbonise our homes and what I am doing personally to address this need. What I haven’t talked about yet is something I’m doing with that tech.. It’s about Data! The invertor for my solar panels creates data on how much energy is produced by each panel, every hour of every day. So far I’ve produced about 30 MWh. I get data about my usage within my house, I get data about how much energy goes into my car, about how much I pump into the grid and how much I take out. My house battery buffers the power flow helping me optimise usage in my home and take advantage of peak prices for putting energy onto the grid; though this is now done for me by joining a virtual power plant run by octopus. I have a smart car charger that will top my car up with solar power, which means that during about 8 months of the year my ‘fuel’ costs are effectively free. When it’s cloudy I can charge my car at night when electricity is v low cost. Incidentally, the data I can get from my car is really interesting to look at, how it’s possible to optimise my driving to reduce energy use is just one aspect. Why am I telling you this? Because having access to data at this level is not just interesting to me but also useful. It helps my provider, #octopus, optimise my power use, driving down my bill, leaving me to just make some basic decisions about when to run the washing machine or dishwasher. But I can also make these choices independently, I can run an agent in my home kit that looks at these dataflows and make similar decisions, but I can also feed in more data, perhaps about my health and exercise from my phone, about gas usage (which I’m going to drive to close to zero), about food consumption etc. To me this is a real world example of how oft discussed aspirations towards a liquid data economy is made real to the citizen. I look forward to the time a can run my own life agents, talking to the data flows in my home, my personal health via phone or watch and the service providers I use, whether via apis like those that I get from #octopus and #tesla, or via integration with apps on my phone like the #NHS. Maintaining the ability to enable not just a citizen centric perspective but also citizen control of our (my) data and how I can benefit from it is, in my opinion, key to how we might move forward in a constructive manner, maintaining not just national sovereignty of action but also personal sovereignty and control. A lot of the work I am currently engaged in with #intersystems is about this. Looking at the intersection between data and people, particularly how to leverage what we can achieve with increasingly capable AI to help improve people’s connections to their world. Making it easier for people to make decisions that benefit them, more quickly, more easily. I wonder what you are doing in this data rich world?
