May 2026I have my coffee in hand and I’m thinking about data again ☕️💭 Last night I was shopping around for car insurance. One policy offered me a discount if I shared my location data for the first 30 days. I showed my husband. He looked at me. I looked at him. We both laughed and said no. (Let's just say my relationship with speed limits is... complicated.) But the concept stuck with me — for protection the parallels are impossible to ignore. Car insurance has been using telematics for years. Black boxes. Driving scores. Behaviour-based pricing. Life insurance is at a similar inflection point. Wearables. Health apps. Lifestyle data. The idea that your premium could reflect how you actually live — your steps, your sleep, your stress — isn't science fiction anymore. And that raises a question I think about a lot: If we can price risk more accurately than ever before... are we building a more sustainable, personalised insurance market? Or are we quietly building one that leaves the people who need it most unable to afford it? The technology is moving fast. The ethics conversation needs to keep up. Given the FCA’s focus on the protection gap, do you think customers sharing data would have a positive impact on our market?
