The Elephant in the Room — How to Manage Strong Personalities Every workplace has them. The dominant voice. The interrupter. The challenger. The person who can unintentionally hijack a meeting within minutes. Strong personalities are not necessarily bad for organizations. In fact, they are often: 👉 passionate 👉 experienced 👉 decisive 👉 highly driven But without structure and facilitation, even talented people can derail focus, silence others, and create unproductive meetings. One of the biggest leadership lessons I’ve learned and still experience in supporting clients is that you do not manage strong personalities through force. You manage them through clarity, structure, and disciplined facilitation. A few strategies that can make a major difference: 👉 Start with the end in mind 👉 Define the outcome before the discussion begins 👉 Use neutral redirect language — words that anchor the conversation 👉 Focus on decisions, alignment and progress not debates 👉 Create space for quieter voices 👉 Re-anchor the conversation when it drifts Some of the most powerful phrases in meetings are: 👉 “Let’s reconnect to the objective.” 👉 “Let’s come back to our commitment for this meeting.” 👉 “What is the best solution for the business?” 👉 “What perspectives have we not yet heard?” 👉 “What decision do we need today?” And here’s the harder reality: Sometimes the strongest personality in the room is also the person with the most authority. That changes the dynamic completely. A few techniques that help: 👉 Don’t publicly compete for control 👉 Redirect through the meeting objective, not emotion 👉 Create space for additional perspectives respectfully 👉 Use summaries to rebalance the room 👉 Protect psychological safety for quieter voices Examples: 👉 “To ensure we are all aligned , what do others think?.” 👉 “Before we finalize, what risks should we still consider?” 👉 “To reconnect us to today’s objective…” The strongest facilitators in a room are rarely the loudest. They are the ones who can keep people aligned, focused, and moving forward — especially when emotions, authority, or competing opinions enter the conversation. That’s often the real elephant in the room. www.elevatesleadership.com if you are struggling to be heard in meetings. #Leadership #Facilitation #Communication #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipDevelopment #TeamDynamics #Meetings #PeopleLeadership

What is your journey? Leader or SME? Most career growth conversations focus on what’s next — but not enough focus on what’s worth pursuing next. "Where do you need more clarity?" is a question that often comes up in coaching conversations. Sometimes, visualization can help with this. A the simple and effective visualization tool is the "Ease vs. Impact Matrix". Note: See lower right corner of visual below for how to apply it. It helps leaders and subject matter experts prioritize opportunities by asking two powerful questions: 1️⃣ How much impact will this create? 2️⃣ How realistic or achievable is it right now? When you map opportunities this way, clarity starts to emerge. You quickly identify: ✔️ Quick wins worth acting on immediately ✔️ High-impact growth opportunities worth planning for ✔️ Low-value distractions consuming time and energy ✔️ Development paths aligned with your strengths This becomes especially valuable when deciding between: 🔹 A leadership pathway OR 🔹 A subject matter expert (SME) pathway For aspiring leaders, the matrix can help prioritize: Leadership certifications Team lead opportunities Cross-functional projects Coaching and communication skills For SMEs, it can highlight: Technical specialization Facilitation expertise Industry certifications Thought leadership opportunities The real value? It shifts career development from reactive or emotional decision-making to intentional growth planning. Not every opportunity deserves equal energy! The best career moves are often the ones that balance: ➡️ Meaningful impact with ➡️ Realistic execution Sometimes the next best step isn’t the biggest step — it’s the smartest one. www.elevatesleadership.com if you would like to talk about your journey. #LeadershipDevelopment #CareerGrowth #Coaching #ContinuousImprovement #LeadershipJourney #LearningAndDevelopment #StrategicThinking #CareerPlanning
