May 2026Two moments. Two decisions. Two outcomes. Two nail-biting IPL moments this week… In one game, a young finisher, Mukul Choudhary, holds his nerve, trusts his preparation, and delivers a last-ball win. In another, an experienced match-winner like David Miller backs himself in a crunch moment… and falls short by a single run. Both had skill. Both had intent. Both believed in themselves. Yet, outcomes diverged. So what’s the management takeaway? 1. Practice builds instinct, not certainty.. Relentless preparation (Mukul practicing 100–150 sixes a day!) doesn’t guarantee success—but it builds the confidence to act decisively under pressure. In organizations, preparation equips teams to take bold calls, even when outcomes are uncertain. 2. Mentorship shapes potential.. Behind every high performer is a coach who sees what others don’t. Whether it’s a leader like Justin Langer spotting talent early or a manager grooming a team member—belief from a mentor amplifies performance. 3. Inspiration fuels aspiration.. Role models matter. Watching greatness (like Dhoni finishing games) creates a mental blueprint. In corporate life, leaders who “walk the talk” inspire teams to raise their own benchmarks. 4. Decision-making under uncertainty has no perfect model.. At 2 runs needed off 2 balls—take the single or not? No AI, no algorithm, no predictive model can fully capture human judgment under pressure. Data guides us, but decisions are ultimately human. 5. Backing yourself is non-negotiable.. Both players trusted their instincts. One succeeded, one didn’t. But the real failure would have been hesitation. In business, indecision often costs more than a wrong decision. 6. Outcome ≠ Quality of Decision This is critical. Miller’s choice wasn’t “wrong”—it just didn’t work this time. Great organizations evaluate decisions based on logic and context, not just results. 7. Fine margins define success A six vs a dot ball. A deal won vs lost. A project delivered vs delayed. Execution in the last mile separates good from great. Final Thought: In high-pressure environments—whether cricket or corporate—success is not about eliminating uncertainty. It’s about preparing deeply, trusting your instincts, and having the courage to own the outcome. Because in the end… You don’t always control the result. But you always control the decision. #Leadership #DecisionMaking
