Apr 2026What Outcome Ownership Looks Like (4-5 series) “We delivered the project” and “we delivered the outcome” are not the same sentence. Most corporate functions are hired, measured, and rewarded for the former. The latter requires something most org structures don’t make easy: clear ownership of a result that spans people, budgets, and timelines outside your direct control. Outcome ownership looks like this in practice: a Finance leader accountable not just for closing the books accurately, but for the quality of capital decisions the business makes. An HR leader accountable not just for filling roles, but for whether the organization can execute its strategy with the talent it has. The shift is not semantic. It changes what you measure, who you hire, and what conversations leadership is willing to have. Most organizations aren’t there yet. The ones moving fastest have one thing in common: leadership that stopped asking “did the function perform?” and started asking “did the outcome land?” This week’s series has been building toward this. Start from Monday if you haven’t.
The Seams Problem (3-5 series) Most corporate failures don’t happen inside functions. They happen between them. Finance approved it. Legal cleared it. Operations said yes. And somehow it still didn’t happen. The integration points between functions, where handoffs occur, where accountability blurs, where information gets filtered before it moves, are where strategy dies and where speed is quietly taxed every single day. AI won’t fix this. Better software won’t fix this. The bottleneck is structural: functions optimized independently, measured independently, and incentivized to protect their own lanes. The organizations closing this gap aren’t reorganizing. They’re redesigning decision rights: who owns the outcome, not just the activity, at each seam. That’s a harder problem than any technology deployment. But it’s the one that actually moves the needle. Earlier this week: why outdated mental models are the root cause.
Apr 2026HR / People (2-5 series) The function responsible for human potential is often the least equipped to adapt its own. HR sits at the center of every transformation conversation: workforce planning, capability building, culture, leadership development. And yet, in most organizations, it remains one of the most process-bound, compliance-oriented functions in the building. The mental model at fault: HR exists to manage people, not to build the human capability the strategy actually requires. When that distinction collapses, you get a function that is excellent at onboarding, offboarding, and everything administrative in between, but largely absent from the decisions that determine whether the organization can execute at all. In an era where talent is the primary constraint on growth, where AI is reshaping every role faster than job descriptions can be rewritten, and where culture is either a strategic asset or a quiet liability: HR cannot afford to be a support function. The organizations pulling ahead are the ones where the People function is shaping strategy, not just staffing it. If your CHRO isn’t in the room when competitive decisions are made, that’s the diagnosis. Scroll back to Monday’s post for the mental model behind why this pattern persists across almost every function.
