May 2026The Board–Management Misalignment That Delays Executive Hiring One of the most overlooked reasons executive hiring stalls is subtle misalignment between board expectations and management priorities. The board may want transformation. Management may want stability. The outgoing executive may have left unresolved tension. When expectations are not explicitly aligned before search begins, candidate evaluation becomes inconsistent. Common patterns include: - One stakeholder prioritising growth, another prioritising cost discipline - Divergent views on risk appetite - Disagreement on how much cultural change is required - Unspoken concerns about succession depth These tensions rarely surface clearly at the start of a search process. But they shape selection decisions. Executive hiring works best when alignment is established early. Without it, the search becomes a negotiation between internal perspectives rather than a focused effort to solve a defined business challenge. Clarity reduces cycle time. Misalignment extends it.
