𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝗽 This week, conceptual artist SHL0MS posted a painting on X, labeled it "Made with AI," and asked people to explain what makes it inferior to a real Monet. Here are some responses he got: - "𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘺. 𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘵." - "𝘕𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯." - "𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦'𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭." - "𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 20% 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵." The painting was a real Monet - from his Water Lilies series, painted around 1915. When the truth came out, critics started deleting their comments. But the screenshots survived 😁 I found this poetically ironic, because the impressionists themselves we're criticized with the exact same language. In the late 19th century impressionists were labeled as sloppy, unfinished, lacking skill and "Not real art". The term Impressionism itself was coined as an insult, mocking one of Monet's earliest works "Impression, Sunrise". The Impressionists were rejected from the official Paris Salon. Audiences came to their independent exhibitions to laugh. Today they have entire floors in all classic art museums in the world, and some works by Monet are considered priceless. Change is hard to accept - we like knowing how things work, and we hate when something disrupts that. But imagine a world where all art stayed strictly realistic, and also imagine a world with no generative AI. 👉 Original tweet by @SHL0MS in comments
