I've never been great at the after-part of conferences. You meet someone interesting, swap WhatsApps or LinkedIns, both promise to follow up next week. Then the week passes. Then a month. Their name shows up in your contacts and you can't quite remember what you talked about, or if reaching out now would be weird. The SIM Conference space on Meetball is still alive days later. Same people, same context, still posting what they're working on, what they need, what they can offer. The follow-up is just opening the space, not digging up a half-remembered conversation from a contact card. And even if you weren't at SIM, the space is still open. You can see what people came looking for, what they're offering, and the collaboration opportunities still there. Reach out to anyone you'd want to meet. The conference ended. The community didn't. 𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Following on from my previous Claude experience post; In parallel with building our Drupal vacation rental web site ( 2020vision.ch ) starting from zero Drupal knowledge, I am building home automation solutions for our three properties. I didn’t expect Claude to perform particularly well because this work is much closer to physical devices than my other work. How wrong I was! I started by asking him if he could help and he listed which devices he is already familiar with and thee was a good overlap with the products I already had on my desk. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆. Radio technologies such as WiFi and ZigBee are within my comfort zone, however, I estimated ten clear days of effort would be required to build this, in practice Claude and I built a pretty sound solution in a very intense day and a half. The project is still not complete but the progress is limited by the search for, and testing of, end devices to serve our needs. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆. We’ve implemented a Home Assistant and ZigBee2MQTT in Docker containers running in Linux on a NUC at each property. This gives me (remote) control over the majority of functions at each location. We will soon integrate the solution with Apple Home to simplify the user experience. The screenshot is of the main Home Assistant dashboard from the House, the larger of the two properties. I was contacted by a recruiter yesterday out of the blue. He is trying to staff a role in Zurich which on the surface interested me. A couple of fundamentals where missing from his summary: 1) No indication of the nature of the contract (Permanent or Interim; I am specifically looking for an Interim assignment) 2) No indication if the role was on-site or hybrid (I live two hours commute from Zurich so five days per week with four hours on a train would not be viable) I replied: “Thank you for your message. Before wasting our time, a couple of questions: 1) is it a permanent or interim role? 2) how flexible is your client with location (assuming it’s in Zuri, is hybrid working possible)?” His response: Nothing, zip, nada! This is a recurring theme at the moment (I have experienced this at least a dozen times this year from different recruiters). I suspect the root cause to be agents gathering CVs without a client mandate. I feel such behaviour is disrespectful towards both clients and candidates.

I am genuinely enjoying developing software again (albeit with help from 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲)! I have found my combo of PM and RE experience and 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲 a perfect toolkit to deliver high quality solutions in very short time (treating Claude as a junior developer). 𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗲𝗯 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 Yesterday I launched our new web site. It’s development has been intense but great fun. Learning Drupal from scratch including Drupal Commerce and integration with a Payment Provider. 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 www.2020vision.ch is now live; you can book your vacation at our apartment in Lugano, Switzerland. As well as accommodation you can also order from our wine selection as well as other local Ticinese goodies. We will add more content over the coming weeks and months. Just for fun, we already have draft pages about both The Flat and our ongoing renovation project at The House. City guides and other goodies will follow. Our current schedule is to open The House as a Bed and Breakfast in 2028 enabling you to experience the vibrant city of Lugano and the beautiful alpine countryside of the Valle di Blenio.
