May 2026🚀 I spent 9 hours migrating 3.9 million records from MySQL to MS SQL Server. It failed. Three times. Here’s exactly what went wrong — and how I finally fixed it. We had a legacy MySQL database with over 3.9 million records that needed to be moved to SQL Server. It sounded straightforward, but it wasn’t. Attempt 1 — SQL Server 2025 I used SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for automatic type conversion. Errors appeared everywhere. The biggest issue? Foreign key constraints. MySQL is flexible and allows NULL values in foreign key columns. SQL Server is strict — it rejects them unless the column is explicitly defined as nullable. Fix: I identified the problematic foreign keys and dropped the constraints that weren’t explicitly nullable. The migration completed successfully… or so I thought. Attempt 2 — The Version Problem Later that night, I discovered the client’s environment was running SQL Server 2022, not 2025. Around 3.2 million records migrated, but approximately 700,000 failed due to type mismatches. SQL Server 2022 handles data type conversion differently. Uninstalling 2025 just to install 2022 locally was a nightmare. Attempt 3 — Docker to the Rescue Thankfully, I had learned Docker just two days earlier. I spun up a clean SQL Server 2022 container in minutes — no uninstallation, no system mess, perfect isolation. I ran the SSMA migration again, but the 700,000 problematic records still failed due to type mismatches. Attempt 4 — The Final Fix I built a custom C# console application specifically for the failing records. Using batch processing, I read data from MySQL and inserted it into SQL Server in controlled chunks. After 5 more hours of focused work… All 3.9 million records were successfully migrated with zero data loss. Key Takeaways (Save these for your next database migration): Always verify the exact target environment version before starting — it can save you hours. MySQL is lenient with NULLs in foreign keys. SQL Server is strict — make columns explicitly nullable or handle constraints carefully. Docker is a lifesaver — spin up any SQL Server version instantly without affecting your local setup. When SSMA fails on type mismatches, C# batch processing becomes your best friend. Every failure is a clue — document the errors and let them guide your next step. 3.9 million records. 4 attempts. 9+ hours across 2 days. But I came out with three sharpened skills: SSMA, Docker, and high-volume batch data processing in C#. Sometimes the failed attempts teach you the most.
