15th April 2026 marked the end of my exciting 21-year journey with the building solutions industry trail blazer and pioneer, MRM. It also heralded a new dawn for me with immense opportunities to build with the knowledge and experience I gained from MRM and the Safal Group, among others. I recall my first week with the company way back in March 2005 as if it was just the other day but then, the transformation I went through somehow overwrites my memory so much so that my initial experiences are now blurred. To put things into context, most lawyers would get bored by the day-to-day grind that is their clients' operations. Indeed, sitting in the office for long hours in the first month scrutinizing operation manuals and doing plant visits was no mean feat. With time, I got used to the company's operations, understood the business of the Company and ultimately, the business the company is in. Borrowing a leaf from the sages, you will never know the weight of the crown until you wear it. Furthermore, walking a mile in someone else's shoes is the only way to truly understand them. MRM, and indeed, the Safal Group, mean business every step of the way. These guys are strategic, critical and expert thinkers and literally live the future daily! Strategic thinking is the blood that flows through the veins of the business. I was privileged to have sat through numerous business review and strategy meetings during my tenure so much so that at the time of my exit, I was more of a business person than a lawyer. So, what holds MRM (and the Safal Group) together and keeps them ahead of the pack? In my view, strategic guidance from the founders/shareholders, oversight by the Board of Directors coupled with the latitude given to management and employees in executing their duties while recognizing and rewarding talent, have immensely contributed to the coveted position MRM occupies in the world of business in Kenya and Africa. During my tenure with MRM,I witnessed the proliferation of competition in form of independent profilers some of whom attempted to enter the building solutions market riding on MRM's well-known brands at the expense of the consumers. Surprisingly, it is not the legal wins in court that endeared MRM's brands to the consuming public; it was the innovative and customer-focused solutions the Company developed, the philanthropic endeavours, and the trust customers have always placed on MRM as a brand!
