India’s renewable energy ambition is no longer just about adding generation capacity. It’s about building the infrastructure that can move power efficiently across the country. The statement by MNRE official on the need for a “China-like super grid” reflects a reality the sector is increasingly facing: ⚡ Renewable energy generation is growing rapidly ⚡ But transmission and evacuation infrastructure are struggling to keep pace India is targeting ~500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, and achieving this scale will require far more than solar parks and wind farms. It will require: • Massive interstate transmission corridors • Faster Right of Way (RoW) clearances • Grid-scale energy storage integration • Stronger coordination between states and central agencies • Modernized balancing infrastructure for intermittency management The challenge is no longer “Can India generate renewable power?” The challenge is: ➡️ Can India evacuate it efficiently? ➡️ Can the grid absorb variable RE at scale? ➡️ Can transmission infrastructure be developed ahead of generation commissioning? A robust national super grid could become the backbone of India’s energy transition — enabling renewable-rich states to supply power seamlessly across the country while improving reliability and reducing curtailment risks.
