My father was a stoelenmatter - a chair caner. He wove rush ('biezen') and can seats by hand, and he looked down on the machine-made ones. "Inferior", he'd say. He was right. Factory weaved rush are pulled too tight, so the seat can't breath, and it gives out years sooner than one of his. His customers also waited months. A single chair could take 24h of labor. He sometimes forgot orders entirely. I think about this when engineers tell me AI-generated code is sub-par. Sloppy. Not how they'd write it. They are often right. And like my father, they're answering a question the market quietly stopped asking. Prefab walls have visible seams too. People still need somewhere to live, and they need it this decade. We will lose something real. Fewer engineers will know how to build a system from scratch, end to end, with full understanding of every layer. That craft becomes rarer. What we gain is problems solved at a speed and scale the industry has never had. The quiet shift for engineering leaders: less defending the craft, more deciding which parts till deserve to be hand-woven and being honest about the rest. P.S. It is worth paying a visit to the Biesbosch Museum https://lnkd.in/erFmcx3B - my father is still weaving rush on video there

Apr 2026Interesting to see how leading digital platforms are redefining growth through real-time systems. Swiggy is mastering immediacy at a hyper-local level, Groww is scaling with a strong layer of user trust, and Meesho is building systems that continuously learn and adapt. What connects these stories is a clear shift. Data is no longer stored for later, it is acted on instantly. #GenAI #RealTimeData #PlatformEngineering #Innovation #DSWT2026 Confluent
