In 2017 an investor flew in an exec to run due diligence on us. The exec's main concern? I was 34. Too old, in his view, to be starting a games company. Why had I waited so long? We went on to run that studio for almost a decade. Most of the companies that started alongside us are long gone. Had I started earlier, we wouldn't have made it past the first couple of years. The experience made the difference. Nine years later, I'm far better at this than I was at 34. I know where the landmines are. I've learned to read the gap between what people say, what they mean, and what they're actually going to do. When to push, when to wait, and how to build the kind of relationships that actually move things forward. That takes reps, there is no shortcut. I'd encourage anyone to start early if they can because the compounding is real. Your first year running a startup teaches you more than ten years in any corporate role, especially at the start when everything is on fire and every decision is yours. That acceleration never really stops. But I'd push back hard on anyone who writes off founders in their 30s, 40s, or 50s. The network alone is worth more than most people realise. You can't build something meaningful on your own, and it's genuinely difficult for someone in their 20s to have the relationships that unlock the hardest doors. In the era of AI and the one-person company, I hope we stop treating founder age as a risk factor and start treating it as context. Someone who's spent 20 years in an industry and now has the tools to move at the speed of a 10-person team? That should terrify incumbents, not investors. Experience compounds.
