How can Canada better support health tech entrepreneurs? This - and many other - important questions were tackled at The National Health-Tech 1nnovation Conference hosted by CHEO and Velocity . A candid conversation with Keean Sarani and Farnoud Kazemzadeh moderated by Moazam Khan stressed the importance of nimble founder-friendly programs, access to risk capital and securing domestic market access as some key ingredients. The Kitchener-Waterloo region is home to a thriving health-tech cluster with companies like Intellijoint Surgical Inc. and FluidAI Medical and the Medical Innovation Xchange . Great to connect with the Mitacs ecosystem supporters and builders Amanda Green and Laura Y. !
Apr 2026David and I had the opportunity to attend the 2026 Faculty of Computer Science Annual Research Expo at UNB earlier this week. It showcased the strength of the research and partnership ecosystem we are building in New Brunswick. We saw how the quality of the research is aligned with real-world challenges and market needs. Across sessions on responsible AI, cybersecurity, data science, digital manufacturing, and healthcare applications, the focus was clearly on solutions that can move beyond the lab into industry and community impact. A key takeaway for me was the growing importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and innovation support organizations. The most promising ideas are developed in a collaborative environment. They a great create outcomes when researchers, students, companies, and partners are working together from the beginning. It was great to connect with partners and colleagues across the ecosystem ( Hung Cao , Stijn De Baerdemacker , Constantine Passaris , Saqib Hakak 🇨🇦 🇵🇸 , Francis Palma , Matthew Douglass , Oksana Tesla ) and discuss how applied research can support commercialization, talent development, and business growth. Congratulations to all the winners and participants in the Pitch Session, Three-Minute Thesis, and Poster Presentation. At Mitacs , we continue to play an important role in this work by helping bridge research talent with industry needs and creating pathways for meaningful research partnerships. Thank you to the organizers, faculty, staff, and speakers ( Ted McDonald , Steve Moore , Sophia Sampath , Bettina Kemme ) for bringing together this event. #MitacsAtlanticImpact #Innovation #AppliedResearch #Commercialization University of New Brunswick | UNB Faculty of Computer Science - Fredericton
